- Before you read on, yes I am a BB10 / Passport user so there is some bias towards the BB10 OS and BB hardware... but this was interesting.
I know that BB10 is EOL and I understand the change in OS (albeit not a fan of Android), so I was looking at the current Android phones and thought the DTEK50 was maybe a cheap option to get into the Blackberry Android, so did the usual of going through youtube for reviews etc.
I came accross this:
Which is a durability test and to be fair to the phone it was pretty good, came out well... but there is a section that shows the speaker section at the top and bottom (and on the back) are covered by stickers not rubber or plastic, which came away very easily.
So as this is a TCL phone is this the build quality that we can expect, yes I know its a small flaw, but one of the best aspects of BB was that whether the phone was a low or high end device the build quality was also good, they never cut corners.
Now before the TCL / Android lovers give me grief, I know the phone is a copy of the Alcatel version and was really just a way of getting Blackberry Android into the marketing, but that being said BB requested certain changes such as the back of the phone being silicon instead of plastic as per the Alcatel phones, so if they are adopting the phone to BB you would like to think that the senior people in BB would look at every details, after all thats how they built there reputation... it just kinda smacks of "that will do".
I understand certain flaws with the phone, such as the battery which is seen as one of the worst on the marketing, but TCL / BB could not have changed that detail without a re-design, but changing the stickers to rubber or a plastic build cannot be that difficult in light of changing the entire back of the phone.
So with the way Mr Chen wants to go forward as a software company, is there going to be less focus on hardware quality? If so for me that really is the end of true Blackberry, their phones are historically built to last with great secure OS / Apps... so we have lost the OS (which as I said I understand) but to potentially lose build quality as well would surely turn off several current BB customers.
That being said I can imagine the KeyOne being a good build as its the high end phone, my worry really is with the low to mid range phones, is that the point where TCL start to cut corners in order to increase profits and if they do how does that affect BB reputation.

I think some of the Passport users will go elsewhere. Some will go with a BlackDroid.
For me it's Sony-Jolla SailFish when it becomes available.
Or maybe Apple iPhone 7.
No Android for me. Especially no BlackBerry Android.
It is a choice.
I respect your possible choices, it's just the choice that I made is probably due to the frustrated issue, of the "Emergency Calls Only" problem that my Passport faces.
Having said that, I guess I will be boycotting the BlackBerry Android platform.
I hope your choices workout for your mobile computing needs.
For me it boils down to good faith, which in my eyes is no longer there.
I want to try other platforms other than Android.
Peace.
Thanks Ed for sharing your input about BlackBerry Android.

Posted via CB1004-09-17 09:52 PMLike 0 - No one is really sure if it is a software or a hardware issue.
The BlackBerry Knowledge Base says the issue is still being investigated.
BlackBerry acknowledges that there is a problem. But won't say what it is.
The issue is about two years old already.
I recently read somewhere that Apple dropped their hardware supplier for their Server products. Due to malicious firmware that affected the said server line.
Apple manned up, and came up to let everyone know that there was a serious issue with their hardware supplier.
BlackBerry. Nada. Nothing. The issue is in limbo.
And they expect brand loyalty from a Passport owner like myself who was affected by the "Emergency Calls Only" with no closure on an important issue as such? Where is the good faith in that.
I apologize if this rant if it may be a bit much for you.
But clearly the opposite of "LOVE" is "HATE".
I love my Passport. I love BlackBerry 10. It is everything that I want in a mobile device.
I clearly do not like Android. And I definitely do not want or like a BlackBerry "powered by Android ".
I hope you see where I am coming from. My miserable situation with the "Emergency Calls Only " Passport is quite clear.
I still continue to use the BlackBerry 10 platform till I can no longer use it as my daily driver in the guise of a white z30.
It continues to support my daily mobile computing needs.
I think Sony-Jolla is my next choice. If it doesn't work for me, then it's Apple iPhone 7.
I guess I am entitled to that choice, as much as the next fellow that would like a BlackBerry powered by Android.
Peace.

Regarding the speaker grille sticker, I really don't see the issue. They didn't come off easily at all, he pried at them with a razor blade.
I don't think it's an issue, the rest of the phone is clearly very solid. It will be a durable phone for those who buy itCerveloJohn likes this.04-09-17 11:45 PMLike 1 - ^^ sounds like a very specific hardware issue that you're having, and I'm guessing your passport is out of warranty by now. I haven't dealt with blackberry customer service personally, but it sounds like a real hassle to get stuff back and forth (especially now that the company has become so fractured)
Sometimes with stuff like cell phones (android specifically) you can just be handed a dud and there isn't much you can do unless you spot it right away. The one thing I like about apple is you can pretty much be 100% confident when you're buying a new product from them. I guess what I'm trying to say is try not to take it too personally when your stuff breaks because we are all going to die someday

Clearly in the earlier posts, the subject matter about TCL is posted in the wrong forum as also mentioned by the other poster.
This is a BlackBerry 10, Passport forum.
Neither the less, I have no quams or issue with TCL built phones.
I do not own one.
It may be better that this was posted at the proper area, so that others that use TCL will be able to appreciate the content of this thread better.
Let's cut it short and say that this should move to the BlackBerry Android forum.
Peace.

Yes, it was already outta warranty when it happened. BTW, others that had the same issue, but that was still under warranty was able to get an RMA for their Passport. Lucky for them. Not so lucky for me and the others.
I am kinda leaning towards Apple iPhone 7, if the Sony-Jolla thing does not push thru.
Thanks, cool advice, very much appreciated.
Peace.

On design - smartphones aren't designed to be durable. If they were, people wouldn't be making them out of all glass. Durable, long life products don't force turnover. If smartphone makers could get away with it, they'd make you buy a new phone every six weeks, for $1000 dollars. As it is, lifetime of eMMC and lithium batteries is only about 5 years anyway. So you are pretty much expected to spend, whatever you spend on a phone, every three to five years.04-11-17 05:45 AMLike 0 - There is no 100% effective quality assurance. The point of this post was just to highlight potential issue with sub-contracting, not really having a go at TCL.Drael646464 likes this.04-11-17 06:35 AMLike 1 - Yeah I understand that concept, I play a sports game which release a new version every year with minimal changes but they know people will want the lastest squad / roster information... I tend to keep my phone for 2 years as I like the change, but I like the quality of the phone to remain pretty much the same for that full two years.
