I'm in the process of updating my phone,will i lose all my contacts or download applications?

No you shouldn't, unless you nuke it but i don't think that you did so I think you are good. But I do think that you will lose your apps unless you backed them up using the tut for upgrading thats somewhere in these forums.

You shouldn't. I also recommend creating a back up prior to performing an update. Just in case cause you never know...
