Why does DM always freeze and check for "device application updates"?!

No idea if this is related to using DM 5.0, but whenever I open DM and plug my BB into the USB, a window opens saying, "Checking for Device Application Updates..." and freezes everything for like 5 minutes.

I've tried to modify the DM install and ask that it not check for updates, and remove the vendor.xml file, but it still insists on doing this every time.

It's super annoying when I just need to sync and run.

Does anyone have a way to stop this from happening?

I had to downgrade back to 4.6 and haven't had any issues since.
