Today, I noticed that my supervisor's 8330 is still running on O/S version 4.3.

So, I told her that I'll bring my laptop to work tomorrow and flash her Blackberry to the latest software. However, I have a few questions for the BlackBerry geeks.

1. Is version 4.5.0.138 the latest version? I downloaded the OS from this site.

2. I currently have my 8900 synced with my BB Desktop Manager v5.0. To be safe, I went ahead and did a full back-up of my device. When I go to flash the 8330 tomorrow, I assume that I should just connect the 8330 to my computer, perform a full back-up, then let the Desktop Manager take care of the rest?

3. Is there a thread somewhere that discussed the improvements from OS vs. 4.3 to v. 4.5? If not, what are some of the major changes?

Verizon's latest "official" OS, 4.5.0.138, is pretty pathetic IMO.

I recommend Sprint's 4.5.0.131 instead:

.138 has no call timer, and the network indicator can sometimes go into a cycle of displaying 1XEV, 1X, 1xev, and 1x, which only a battery pull will fix.

Major improvements going to 4.5 is better memory management, better/faster browser, video camera, and HTML email.

If you are going to do the upgrade on a laptop, I definitely recommend bringing your charger along, you don't want to risk running low on battery power during an upgrade. Plug the laptop in from the start, sometimes you can get an "unable to connect to JVM error" ifthe laptop doesn't supply the full 5V usb specified voltage to the usb port.

As long as version 4.5 is not a downgrade from version 4.3, I think I'll be OK. I'll look into other versions as long as they are stable. Remember, this is my boss's phone, so the software has to be stable and reliable.

4.5.0.131 is the most stable, problem free OS available for the 8330 (excluding the hybrid OSes).

If I upgraded my bosses' 8330, I'd put .131 on it.

You might also want to make a third party backup to CYA:

I have version 4.5.0.77 on my phone, is this new or old. Just got the phone 8 days ago ?? When I go to Desktop Manager it tells me that there is a new version available to download everytime i connect to DM.

Jorger, DM is prompting you to upgrade to 4.5.0.138, which is the latest "official" OS for the Verizon 8330.

.77 is old.

Well xliderider is one of the most knowlegable people on this site and I give much respect to his posts. I never had .131 on my berry I use a hybrid os. Having said that I used the .131 radio file on the last hybrid setup and for me, the call quality was absolutely terrible. So I re-did the hybrid with the .160 radio which was my base for the hybrid, and it works much better. So, .138 is garbage, .131 is supposed to be the best for us verizon users, but the radio did not work for me and the hybrid is the best way to go in my opinion.

Omega, you never had the problem with chirping while on a call with the .160 radio?

.160 and .169 has the chirping problem for some of us on Verizon. I wonder if it is a regional thing?

Well, I never had a chirping problem but the other day I did notice a couple of chirps. It hasn't happened since though. Have you heard anything on the .169 radio?

Never mind just read the last page of the .169 sticky and found out it has profile and chirping problems. I don't know the .131 radio was just super staticy for me.

When I was on .169 I had only a few chirps. At first, I was like wth? If the .131 radio wasn't good for me, I would consider staying on the .169 radio, the chirping was only few and far between and not on every call. But the .131 radio is ok for me, so that's what I'm using. I'm always hoping something better will come along though.

.77 worked good for me until 6 months into it then I started getting speaker blast. Then came blackngray70 and xliderider and my eyes where opened to the great hybrids lol. Now my berry is kickin A#! I like many others are praying we get 5.0 and hope if we do, it runs ok.
