    Hey guys,

This is probably a simple question but I'm new to the BlackBerry scene, so please pardon my ignorance :-)

    I have a Blackberry 8520 with OS 4.6
And I'm thinking of upgrading to 5.0 (for obvious reasons)

I checked the official site, and there is no 5.0 when your service provider is Vodacom (South Africa) :-(

I've read that you can download another provider's OS and then delete the vendor.xml file.

I just want to know if that's really doable, or is it more of a long shot with bugs and what not?

I know it's a simple question but I'd rather be prepared than unknowingly brick my bb :-)

I think that if you search this site you may find a suitable OS upgrade for your phone. I have actually never used an upgrade from my own carrier...I have used OS upgrades from other carriers and simply deleted the "vendor" file.

When one GSM carrier releases a OS it's like they all did. Just follow the instructions in the Blackberry 101 forum, delete the vendor xml, and you will be rocking OS 5.0 goodness before you know it.

I can't explain it but I hooked my bb up to the pc, it asked to update my BB messenger, and 30 mins later I had the 5.0.

    Piece of cake

You had BBM 5.0, but not OS 5.0, I think. Go to Menu>options>about and check your OS version.
