figured it out. when u have an sms chat and bbm chat with a bbm contact it shows the cell phone to let you know that its sms, and the bbm icon as bbm chat!
after updating to os 5.0 and bbm 5.0 theres a cell phone looking icon next to one of my bbm contacts.
