What is the best known tethering software or application for tethering without using the wireless provider's service for tethering.
pdanet
it's free, and it works well. (you occasionally get a pop-up on your computer about wanting to register it, or continue using for free.. but that's not an issue for me.)
download the app on your phone, download/install the program on your computer.
on your phone, open PDAnet, click "enable USB connectection"
then on your computer, open PDAnet (it'll probably already be loaded into your lower right set of programs, and click "Connect")
and viola! tethering for free.
PdaNet -- Use your BlackBerry as a USB Modem
Personally I would have to go with Tether, which is a paid application. Their speeds and support are amazing, and many times you can catch the application for 50% off :)
Great app, and well worth the money
I have also heard good things about "Tether". But my only question is... with PDaNet being a free version of software that does essentially the exact same thing, why would you spend the money on it, when you can have the same result for free?
I never understood that. PDANet works perfectly as described, I see no need to pay for something that can (legally) be had for free. To each their own..
Well i've tried both actually and brand tether is a lot faster on my phone for some reason. I was wondering if there is a third option. because tether is a bit steep.
PdaNet is good and so is tether, i have both on my BB and laptop, there have only bee a few advantages that i have found with tether, they upgrade their software, you can VPN with tether not PdaNet, Downloading files through tether is a littler faster. But if your just tinkering around on CB or any other web sites PdaNet will do you just fine.
- pdanet is free and is slow and can be a pita to set up -- but you only need do this once.
- BlackBerry Desktop Manager 5.01 has tethering built-in and that makes it free too but without the pain.
- Tether is $49.95 and works perfectly. It has the added advantage that the tethered traffic leaves the phone via the same port as the BlackBerry's own browser. This makes it quite hard (unless you really download gigabytes) for your carrier to spot what you are doing. Many carriers demand a monthly payment for the pleasure of tethering and Tether sidesteps this annoyance.
You might have to walk me through using Blackberry manager to tether. i have the newest version of software but requires my carrier's information to make it work. i do not want to do that if my carrier will start charging after i start it.
If you have a unlimited data plan you should have no worries. Just a FYI if you have sprint you CANNOT tether through the Desktop Manager. They stopped doing it about 5 months ago.
Tethering through Desktop Manager v501 usually works first time so long as your carrier allows it.
You should call them and ask
a). is tethering allowed
b). is there an additional charge for tethering.
If you get a "Yes" to a). and a "No" foer b). then you are good to go.
If the carrier wants more money, then buy Tether. That's what I did.
