Yeah, it's basically the new generation of Curves, better camera, new OS interface, more memory (256mb) and higher res screen.
So far it is only GSM, meaning it will work on AT&T and T-Mo but minus the 3G. There are rumors that a CDMA version may be released later this year
So this is supposed to be the replacement for the extremely popular 83xx series, and it lacks 3G even on AT&T? What am I missing here.
83xx no have 3g, same as 8900. New curve has better processor, new software, better camera, memory, better LCD, and processes EDGE faster than old models. Worthy upgrade if you own 83xx.

there are different types of EVDO and the 8330 doesnt have the one that is "3g" which i believe is rev A?
rev.0 and rev.A are both "3g" that is, they are third generation and meet or exceed the 3GPP2's uplink downlink specifications.

The 8330 and 8530 are the only Curve models with "3g" so far, due to the fact that there hasn't been a CDMA phone made without EVDO for a little while now, and the major providers wouldn't be interested in selling one if it didn't have it. If and when an xx30 version of the 8900 series is built it will have EV-DO, but I won't speculate as to whether it will be rev.0 or rev.A

In my opinion ( I have sat down and tested this). There is no big difference between 3g and edge when it comes to speed. My 8900 is faster than my brother's Bold. EDGE + 8900 = Killer Speed.
Yes, but CDMA2000 with EV-DO is 3G, per the 3GGP2, regardless of rev.A or rev.0
Just like UMTS is 3G per the 3GGP... 3G does not exist as a service, it is an abstract description for any 3rd Generation telecom service that meets the specifications under the corresponding 3G Partnership Project.

Haha your to funny! EVDO/CDMA is dead technology anyways, some people only consider EVDO "3G" since it occasionally reaches 3G speeds... my EDGE 8900 occasionally reaches 3G speeds to so I guess my 8900 is 3G after all.
According to wikipedia "EDGE is part of ITU's 3G definition and is considered a 3G radio technology."
It just doesnt have the theorectical data rates as the other 3G technologies but in the real word the speeds are similar.
I am sorry but 3G is overrated. Enhanced EDGE uses far less battery. I had 3G on my N82 and was not impressed. I was impressed with my 8900's speeds and battery life. I get a whole extra day out of the 8900 with WI FI and EDGE on all day. IMO 8900 just rocks.

It really depends on where you are. In downtown Milwaukee I was getting 250KBPS-300KBPS (I'm almost positive that I wasn't connected to WIFI) on my 8900, thats considered 3G speeds. The new iPhone 3GS in the same area only got 500KBPS. Yes, 3G is still faster, but when you look at the pros and cons of 3G, EDGE starts looking a lot better.
+1. I hooked my Macbook up the other day was was data tethering using EDGE and I was shocked at how fast pages loaded. I guess it all depends what you are doing as well. Checking email vs. playing Youtube etc. I never thought I would say this but to me Enhanced EDGE > 3G not for speed, but for its usefulness, battery life, reception and price...

If your in a good coverage area (unfortunately I don't live, work, or go to school in one haha) tethering can be good on Enhanced EDGE. Enhanced Edge can reach speeds of up to 473KBPS (according to wikipedia) which is similar to UMTS or older 3G technology. 3G, IMO, is not "revolutionary" like AT&T would have you believe. Tethering is the only area in which I see a big difference and if your using it in a crappy 3G area then there really isn't a difference. LTE/4G I hope is a big step forward and doesn't have the connection and battery issues that 3G has.
So to anyone who is skeptical about the 8900 not having 3G, give it a try. Even if you use to own an EDGE device and were dissapointed in its speed give the 8900 and Opera Mini a try. It gets 8 channels of EDGE instead of 2 meaning it will be a lot faster than the iPhone 2G, 83XX, etc. you use to be using. 3G is still in terms of KBPS, faster, but when you compare the pros and cons of EDGE vs. 3G overall EDGE doesn't look soo bad.
