I backed up my 8330 using desktop manager and the size of the IPD file is only 20MB. My file free is 29MB (out of 83MB total) so I assume I should have well over 20MB of data on the phone that should be backed up. Am I missing something here?

I think the part you are missing is that a backup does only the
databases and settings. It does not backup applications which
is why the file size isn't quite squaring with what you expect.

My file free is 26mb out of 64. The average size of a backup file
    for me is 775k

i used to run about 32 ff, but recently downloaded a bunch of stuff (see: CRAP) so 22/23 aint bad, can prob do a reset and get back to 30 or so.

That does seem small, waaay to small. My backups are ranging from 377mb to 478mb with a file free of 28mb
I think you mean your file back up is between 37 and 47MB, right? I would feel comfortable with that considering my file free size... but 20MB? Doesn't sound right. I'm worried that if my phone ever gets lost or is damaged, I won't get back all my data. Thoughts?

Good grief... only 775k? Mine says 20,895k. When you only have 29MB out of 83MB memory free, that would mean 54MB is being used. The backup file is only 20MB leaving 34MB to applications? That seems a bit high considering I have only a couple applications added to my phone. Just to note, I have a TREMENDOUS number of emails on my phone. 3,658 to be exact.

one thing: i dont think the back up backs up the OS, which takes up some of that file space

okay, i think something is wrong in that the file it too big.

i have a ton of crap on my phone and have never had a file about 3 megs or so.... do another back up adn see what happens.

can u post a screen shot? of the file with a tool tip or the properties open?

My thinking exactly. Even when my phone was new and cluttered with all
kinds of crap, I never approached 3mb for a backup file.

And out of curiosity, why are you keeping that much email. That is a recipe
    for an impending memory meltdown.

I just purged ~2,000 today. The phone works OK and I never let the FF memory drop below 20MB (I heard 12MB is the minimum). I like to have the emails (approx 6 months worth) in my hand. It's important for my job. You have no idea how many times I've had to recall old emails for work. Having them there, at least for me... is priceless.
