Actually, it raised more for me than answered. I knew the difference between the m and standard 8330's, but have never heard anything about the hardware issues. I DO know about the application incompatibility (Google Maps is the one that bugs me the most...it won't use the internal GPS). So are you saying that RIM is now making the old 8330's again and not the 8330m's? Will they even attempt to solve the problems since the phone is "old" (it is still the newest blackberry that my rural carrier has)?

    VV

Ok since ppl still seem to be confused about the difference in the 8330 and the 8330m... the 8330 is a normal esn... the 8330m has an MEID (which has been explained) a quick check is if you go to options and status... under DEC does it stat with a "268"

The difference... there were hardware issues with alot or the 8330's that originally were released so they pulled them off the market while RIM changed some of the circuitry in them and tried to enable the wireless update (still does not work quite right) they loaded the same software as the first 8330.... They have recently discovered that these devices with the MEID's do not always allow you to load applications onto the device.. .it tells you that nothing is compatible and some features that you have with BES servers do not always function.

I am not saying this is every device just a majority or them.

    hope that answers the questions

Is the Sprint .131 the same as this .138?

No, this is for the MEID based 8330.

.131 is for the ESN based 8330.

There is a .138 for the ESN based 8330 here...http://forums.crackberry.com/f52/new...evices-208149/

I don't know about Sprint but it didn't unlock GPS for third party apps on Verizon.

What OS version do you have now, is it .131?

If so, you should stick with that .138 has some radio issues and the onscreen call timer is missing.

yeah I have 4.5.0.131 (Platform 3.4.0.25) well by Gps issues I'm more referring to the Google Maps issue and similar 3rd party apps not being able to access the internal Gps with the M. Sprint doesn't have the Gps locked down and that's why I thought maybe the OS update might fix this issue.

I'll hold off for now. thanks for the advice blackngray

You could try it and see.

I know this is a long thread but if you read through it maybe some Sprint users have posted about it.

what do I do if the install of the new OS goes corrupt because my nephew knocked over the phone while it was installing and it unplugged the cable?

I tried just hooking it back up to see if it'll launch the install, but it won't and it doesn't do it if I go in the application manager, either.

Hey Everyone -- I have a verizon 8330M. Last night, *stupidly*, I installed the 8330 non-M version. Realized what I had done when my service was stuck on 1X. Then reverted back to 4.5.0.77. Now, trying to install this version, but blackberry desktop wont recognize theres an update. When I plug in my berry to my computer, run the desktop manager, it says no updates.

i deleted vendor xml file any everything.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

I seem to be the only guy that has a problem with sprint.131. When I change back to the sprint 4.3 version my problem is corrected so would a hybrid work for me on sprint?

My issue is on sprints 4.5 my phone comes out of stand by , by holding red phone button down. The older version 4.3 does not come out of stand by....

anyone have a link to the .131 version?? this one will not load on my verizon 8330m for some reason (even though the 8330 version loaded fine). My 8330 has the MEID, so Im assuming its the 8330. Im stuck with 4.5.0.77 right now, and want a newer release

    EDIT:
nevermind --- i found the sprint release, it wouldn't load either. Im starting to doubt the whole "m" distinguishment based on MEID. the 8330 version installed fine, i haven't been able to get a single 8330m version installed

I think i managed to get the upgrade to work in desktop 4.7
all i did was disable my wifi so the software could not phone home.
and i was able to get it to upgrade to 4.5.0.138
what also cool is it appers that all the backup steps were done automagicly.
all apps were back and my wallpaper was what it started out as

Hey guys, finally installed this on my 8330m (which i cant stand, its an insurance replacement from my 8330) and no signs of anything different, still get the 1x after texting, jumpy reception while using data and very laggy when you try to pick up the phone, if it is mid vibration, it just keeps vibrating and the person on the other end is like "what are YOU doing"

Are you positve you have an MEID device? The MEID OS won't load on a ESN 8330 and the ESN OS won't load on a MEID 8330, no errors or anything, Loader and DM just plain won't load it, no different than if you tried to load the Bold OS onto your 8330. Under options>about, on the first screen, the device name should read BlackBerry 8330m and under options>status, the last two lines should read MEID (dec) followed by 2 blocks of 5 numbers each and 2 blocks of 4 numbers each; then MEID (hex) followed by a block of 8 alphanumerics and a block of 6 alphanumerics. If your screens dont read exactly as described, it's a standard 8330, also called an 8330e.

Got it installed fine... Didn't read about the call timer being gone until I got it loaded... and i must say,

REMOVING THE CALL TIMER IS DUMB PUT IT BACK NOW

    please...

and someone from RIM fill me on how that meeting went, i'm guessing something to the effect of:
"hey, guys, lets pay RIM to take out the call timer so people can run their minutes up not be able to pay as much attention?" "oh, yeah, that's a great idea! you get a raise!"

because it was code that had to be consciously removed (probably just commented out), it was not a mistake. rude

    ugh.

oh, yeah, it seems to respond crisper otherwise.
