Media Card Support - Can not turn it on: can't read memory card

I have two used BB Curves 8300 & 8310 on at&t. Neither can see their memory card. Under Options/Media Card/Media Card Support it states "Off". There is no option to turn this to "On".

I have attemnpted to format the card while the BB is connected to my PC error message states: "there is no disk in drive G".

Other info - phone was a company device that was retired. They had removed or blocked the media card support for security reasons. I wiped the device and ungraded the OS to v4.5.0.110. Not sure if this has anything to do with the issue, but thought it might.
