I didn't know getting my blackberry set up would suck this much.
Alright, so I'll start here: My blackberry desktop manager says my phone is not connected to my computer and it won't let me do anything, but I can access the internet on my blackberry. wat.
I just want to get my email set up and all that. Nothing crazy.
You have BIS right?
You go to the icon 'Email Settings' on your BB to set up your email.

Because I'm pretty sure I'm not experiencing a common problem, I don't feel dumb for asking what BIS is.

I need to point out that Desktop Manager has nothing to do with adding emails to BIS... just a side note...
As Solachica said, BIS is what makes your device get all the cool stuff BlackBerry-wise.
To add emails you either log in to BIS online (on the PC) or run the Email Wizard (envelope icon inside the green engine folder).
Actually it is a quite common problem. You would do well to visit here:

If the information suggested is confusing to you you can either go to your carrier store or call customer care from a landline and they can walk you thru it. I am surprised they didn't offer to set it up for you when you got your BB. I always would set up the email if my customer didn't know how to do it. It is easy just frustrating if no one shows you. Your rep should had helped you. But once you get into email settings it is easy. Follow the prompts. Good luck
