Why don't you want to take it in for a new phone?

If you do a backup and a third party backup, then you have nothing to worry about. Especially, since you won't have to deal with a stuck trackball anymore.

Back-up your files and take it in to T-Mobile - if they can't fix it you'll get a new one.

They should give you a new phone because it is less than 30 days old.

Do the backup, and third party backup:

Then take your BB in to a T-Mo store. When they give you a new 8900. Do a wipe handheld to erase your personal info. Options > Security Options > General Settings > Enter > Wipe Handheld.
