does anybody know how to remove/move the grey strip at the top of the home screen which has the date and time in it? I want to see all of my background image and its ruining it! :(

I'm just guessing that you'll need to find a theme that has no status bar on top... or at least no transparent bar. I don't think this can be removed from the default theme.
No way to remove it.
You'll need to use a 3rd party theme that doesn't have the banner.
