The users guide I found at "http://docs.dal.net/docs/jmircen.html#1" gave me all my answers about the program Jmirc except 1. I keep running into the same error message, below, no matter what server I try to log into (Dalnet, Undernet, Efnet and so on). The web browser works fine (I d/l Jmirc direct into the Blackberry curve 8530) on web pages that don't need Java. I am still having a problem getting Java to work, 1 problem at a time.
The error message is "***connecting to irc.dal.net at port 6667*** ***error trying to connect to IRC server, aborting... Exception: invalid url parameter." From the meny desktops and laptops that I have worked on I know the error is a simple protocol problem. I just don't know the Blackberry Curve setup well enuff to know what protocol line and were to change. And I don't want to just go blindly charging in like a ragging bull and start changing protocol's.

I remember that error, you need the Blackberry specific version.

    From the jmIRC site:

Those who own a BlackBerry device, I recommend to check out the beta version of jmIrc at http://jmirc.sf.net/beta/jmIrc.jad which has some BlackBerry specific options. For example you should be now able to connect through WiFi or BES/MDS from the advanced settings. Reportedly also users that need a BIS connection might have better connectivity with the new BlackBerry connection mode. I hope this will help those users who have had connection problems before. Also if you want to support jmIrc development, please consider donating!
Once you have that updated version, set the connection type to Blackberry in the settings.

The download is working for me. I wonder how improvements are as far as battery life and connection stability.

Here at home I think I am not close enuff to a cell tower for data transmiting. Can this Blackberry be config to connect to the internet via the wireless port on my router? I also can download the jad file to my desktop computer but I don't know what prog to use to unconpress the jad file so I can transfer the files to the blackberry via the usb cable.

Just click the .jad link in your mobile browser and it will install jmIRC to your phone.
There is a wifi option in the app but like any of the others you're likely to get randomly disconnected.

Might be worth a shot still though.

I was able to tie the blackberry into the house internet connection via my wireless port. The signal strength is very good. There is only a few feet between the router and the blackberry. The download starts then I get the 404 error message.

    Try downloading these files manually:
    http://jmirc.sf.net/beta/jmIrc.jad
    http://jmirc.sf.net/beta/jmIrc.jar

Copy them to a memory card, browse to jmirc.jad on your phone and see what happens.

Neather one of those links will work directly into the phone but I have downloaded the jmirc.jad to my desktop but I can't stick it into the blackberry via the usb cable. The Blackberry doesn't see any file (via the usb cable) that doesn't have ether an ALX or an ALI file ext. So I am still stuck. I am about ready to take it back to Sprint and get a difrent cell phone.

I finely fig out the download problem. That web address for the download is case sensitive and the file name has an uppercase (I) in it that I have been missing.

I wish we could get a version for BB like mIRGGI has for Nokia. What a huge difference in usability, jmirc is just painful to use.

As to your question, try changing the setting from default to wifi, etc. and see if it helps. I got errors on default but wifi works fine.
