Actually, I've always wanted to discover what BBOS before the PlayBook and BB10 is like.

So I made a little project out of a Curve I found on the road scattered in pieces years ago. I failed to find its' owner and tossed it in my recycling pile. Recently when my Passport went for a swim, I drilled out some screws to get it apart quickly to dry. I dug up this Curve which I still had sitting in a pile of e-waste adding winter weight in the trunk of my car to see if I could yard some screws from it. Well, this turned to tinkering and in the meantime I made a parts order online for people I know with broken parts on their phones and added a replacement screen for me for the broken Curve.

The Curve booted up! It offered a small glimpse into this mysterious pre-cursor to what I use now OS which I knew nothing about. It was short lived however. The keyboard began flickering and it seemed as soon as I would try to re-assemble it, it would stop working. Turned out the mainboard was severely warped (curved..) as a result of whatever trauma it had been through and I suppose some flexing while handling caused the already fragile state of it to dislodge some ICs, idk. A moment of silence for the Curve 9300... Okay on with it.

Now this left me with a sense of unaccomplishment. So I shoulda done what any normal person would do and throw it back in to be recycled, but no, I was going to fix this BlackBerry and I wanted to know more (plus practice with smartphone repair) so now I had to find another one in a sad but working state of affair to merger with this one.

Enter probably the best candidate I could have found. The 8520 which I've learned is not entirely case/parts-compatible with the 9300, but I made the two combine anyway. The 8520 was picked up from a local sale which met my criteria in condition and tinkering budget. It had damage to top portion of the housing and all of the convenience buttons were torn off! After Frankensteining the pieces to fit, and cleaning, it went from this:

    To this!

All the buttons work now but the keypads weren't quite compatible so it has the pearly gold flake looking keys still

On the way back home from picking up the 8520, I stopped at a thrift store and got an Otterbox Commuter, my favourite:

So yeah. The OS on first impressions is intuitive and logical. Glad to have a look into it. It's a nice phone now! I like that the device has dedicated media and volume buttons so I'll probably load up some music but as I say, I'm just happy to have fixed up the Curve for some reason

I usually dread taking apart small, portable electronics but the Curve is fairly simple and so it was a fun project

I have a replacement LCD screen labelled 010/113/114 that worked briefly with the 9300 (in the second picture of OP) if anyone wants that I could maybe pay forward, if your lcd version is compatible and if you need one..

The camera is broken so i opened it up again and replaced it, well as much as I could. It still doesn't work after changing it but best of all, I found out the keypad contact pads are stuck on like a sticker. The 8520 had some collapsed keys so swapped it out for the 9300 one (trimmed it up with an artists' knife to make it work).

Now all the keys have click to them

I like what you have done it is fantastic and a great example for recycling and not just buying a new phone when a simple thing breaks

I will be posting some photos of a rebuild next weekend, as I've just ordered a new housing, complete with middle plate. I bought it on the spur of the moment, although I shouldn't have, but we'll see what happens

I should try and restore my two old 8520's. Still the easiest phone to open up and repair to date imo.

    So my case arrived today...
Good news is, it looks beautiful.
Bad news - the earpiece speaker doesn't work, neither does the volume up key and most importantly the lock/unlock button (making it essentially dead,as you can't unlock it in a different manner).
So, I now have a museum exhibit

I'm a bit upset, as I worked all afternoon at it, dismantling it several times, due to the buttons not working ... So that's that... well, enjoy

It was meant as a backup phone for my girlfriend yet some components are defective. I've asked for a refund, we'll see how that goes.
But yeah, the blue is amazing, especially in broad daylight. It's obviously not an original case, but it looks so much better than the Curve's stock colours

As an update, the seller said he will send another unit, so I'm a bit curious about that.
The current blue device has the two screws holding the screen attached to the frame stuck (the screwdriver spins but the screws don't budge, they're too worn out, I think) so if the case arrives, I'll try to put in on my second Curve I will post a subsequent message (with pictures)

Aww. Nah, he's too broken up and needs to be recycled.

I got another one from Powerbook Medic. They might have some non working ones and maybe parts for someone looking to fix up a Curve for some reason.

The one I have now didn't need fixing, has sticker intact on screw, and came wiped. All I know it is entirely hot pink and defaults to Spanish
