    I currently just have a standard, no data plan from ATT with unlimited SMS, MMS, video, etc.

    I found a good price on an unlocked 8300, but do I need a data plan from ATT to use it?

    No aren't required by AT&T to have it, but after a couple days....you'll NEED it.

    You don't "have" to have one, but I don't think you'll have access to the internet without a data plan. Good luck!
