If an 8900 can be unlocked to work on Verizion (either an AT&T or Tmobile device) will it function as designed for both voice and data?
How would one go about obtaining the phone & unlock code. I have the instructions on how to unlock once i get that far.
i dont want to search for and pay for a phone just to try to see if it will work with my carrier.

No this won't work. The 8900 is a GSM device and Verizon is a CDMA network. Check into the Tour.

There is NO WAY, i REALLY want one? VZN doesnt also operate 850&1900 MHz GSM/GPRS networks in North America? got this off a website about VZN wireless networks.

you are confusing one important factor here. all cellular frequencies used in the US operate on 850/1900 MHz, with the exception of iDEN which is 800MHz. all carriers here use this frequency range, however use different technology to carry the signals. verizon doesnt use GSM. they use CDMA technology. the two networks are completely different and their respective devices are non interoperable on eachothers networks. you must get a verizon branded CDMA only or dual radio CDMA/GSM phone like the Storm or Tour. they may be used on either Verizons CDMA network or unlocked and used on any other GSM network, foreign or domestic.

Is the Bold by AT&T a dual radio phone, and can it be unlocked for VZN?

No the Bold is a GSM device and can not work on a CDMA network... I know you said you don't like the Tour's keyboard, but the Tour's keyboard came from the Bold - slightly downsized, but it is from the Bold, and the Tour does work on Verizon, as well as Sprint.

Some VZW phones have GSM so you can use them in other countries.
Verizon however doesn't operate any GSM networks.

No way it's going to happen.
You can always get one of Verizon's Curves...
