Exactly alike? They don't look alike at all ... maybe similar in some aspects but different in many others. It just depends on what you need. Do you need 3G more or do you need WiFi more? Do you use UMA? The tour has 3G while the 8900 has EDGE with WiFi and UMA.
3G on verizon (even sprint) is fast enough for a phone. I really don't understand why everyone crys about wifi. So I guess I'm saying go with the 3G since wifi spots aren't as common as some think.

That just depends on the user. Also not everyone wants/needs 3G.

Because if you're on the phone, you can forget about data or BBM. For some that isn't a huge deal, while others including myself is a deal breaker.
i know the benefits of having wi-fi. i just want to know if the tour is any more advanced than the 8900. but is this correct that the 8900 has no 3g? i believe my g1 phone on tmobile is 3g though...

I'm not sure how many times it needs to be said until you believe it but, NO THE 8900 DOES NOT HAVE 3G.
The Tour is CDMA, so it has 3G download speeds. The 8900 has WiFi and UMA.
the 8900 is smaller and sleeker, like mentioned before. I was really looking into switching from tmobile to verizon but when i found out the 8900 had wifi and the verizon did not, i decided not to make the switch. Now my bf has the storm/verizon, and I have service in his house (thru wifi) while he does not. Huge plus.
I was deciding between the two recently. Sprint retentions made me horrible offers and I was partial to T-Mobile UMA, so I went with the 8900. For me, WiFi + UMA is way more useful than 3G.
well basically the 8900 isnt worth considering because it doesnt have 3g which i did not realize because i assumed all decent phones would have 3g by now
I perfer the Tour keyboard quite a bit over the 8900. Other than that they are very simliar. 3G or wifi is the only deciding factor. Personally I wouldn't buy a phone without 3G.
Is it true the 8900 doesn't have 3g? I would never of guessed.

LOL ... I see you are brain-washed by the commercials. 3G is not the end-all technology. It has its advantages but at the same time, it also has its disadvantages. The 8900 is a great device, despite the absence of 3G. Also, 3G technology has nothing to do with making a phone "descent" as you put it.
For you specifically, it sounds like the Tour is the device you want. Enjoy.
No, its not. However EDGE is more like 2.75G because of the speed and if you want to get technical about it, EDGE is part of the 3G technology. Also, the 8900 has Enhanced EDGE technology so it uses 8 channels instead of 2 channels for EDGE. Finally, if you do not tether then the difference between EDGE and 3G is not that drastic since the browsing sill depends (and is limited by) the device itself.
my 8900 EDGE speeds are plenty enough for basic web browsing. if you really need to have super speedy web browsing all the time go buy a net book or something
