Just ordered the T-Mo 8900 from Amazon.com. Cost me a whopping $0.01 with shipping! I guess Amazon is able to further subsidize the cost of the phone via the commission from T-Mo?

I'm waiting till my Sprint plan is up in about 2 months, then hopefully T-mo can then port the number. I'm trying to avoid Sprint's ETF by not porting it at the time of activation.

Also: Can I get rid of the T-Mo "My Favs" ring on the home screen, or did RIM write that into the OS?

Im not sure how sprint works but if you only have two months left you should be able to port without etf since you only have 2 months left. I know that other carriers are this way such as t-mo and att. Also nice choice on tmo, I switched from alltel for the advantage of gsm and the 8900. I first got my 8900 and loved it but had to experience some variety so used the new sim to my advantage and started buying unlocked. Turns out the 8900 is back in my pocket as it was my fav phone!

edit: to answer your edit you can void the ring with crackmem on an os upgrade. Your my faves will still be there but you just will not be able to change from your phone.

I don't use My Fav, so it does not show up on my BB.

When doing a OS upgrade, you can remove the fave five all together.

I've never seen My Fav on my BB... not on the original T-Mobile (.114) OS, nor on any other OS upgrade.
