My icon is also always grey. My connection to the Wifi router is flawless, though. Have never seen the icon lit up. Maybe that's because I do not have Blackberry services on my device?
I got used to it, it's not a problem.

Any solutions to this issue. Having the same problem. This is getting very frustrating.

If the elves figured it out send them my way
I did a wipe and reinstall of the OS. I wanted to upgrade to 0.199 anyways so it wasn't a big deal..so now it works fine.

it should have nothing to do with whether you have bb service or not.

If so, the MAC address filtering needs to be disabled.
Not true. I have MAC filtering enabled on my router, and I connect just fine. All MAC filtering does is allow you to configure what device(s) can connect to your wireless network based on their MAC address. If the 8900's MAC address is one of the allowed devices, all should be well.

I have MAC filtering as well.... and it works fine, you just need to know the MAC address so you can add it to your safe list

The grey-out finally cleared up. I basically did what "ClintRo" suggested. In this order:

    -Deleted the previous wifi connection.
-Unplug the router and leave unplugged for at least 30 seconds
-Plug the router back in and let it boot up
    -Re-configured the wifi
    -greyed wifi gone.

    Awesome
