    I am on YM all the time, does it effect battery life?

    Of course. Anything that runs all the time affects battery life.

    If you want to get technical, IM programs are somewhat push-like. They don't poll for new messages, instead they wait until another IM program throws something at them.

    But as was pointed out, they use battery power as they are running.

    However, IM+ has an interesting push ability. You shut the app down and tell it to direct all messages to your email. You can even hold a conversation by sending emails back. The application isn't running so you save battery life that way.

    Thanks for the replies guys. Just wondering whether it polls all the time.

    In this case, as I understand it, it doesn't, so it does not effect battery life as it would if its port's open full-time.

    Except when the app is running it is still consuming power. That is why a true push solution is good like what IM+ implements.
