So when my friend hooks up her 8520 to her pc it only opens the sd-card as an external hd, and not the phone memory? Is this a default option with no way around it or what?

From what i understand the SD card is the only memory you have access to under normal conditions. When connected to a computer you have an option to unmount the SD card so the computer has access to it, makit it a card reader in a way.
But if you choose not to do that then you device is still seen just not with the internal phone memory. So pretty much your able to charge it, or update, remove or back up stuff on the device. But no direct access unless you have special software. Or so i am told.

Thanks for the reply, so the files that are saved on the device memory can't be extracted by linking to a pc? So, how can one set apps such as BBM and WhatsApp to save transferred files to the sd-card instead of the device memory?
