If you do not have a router, you will have to find a network that does not need a password to connect. Check out the forums, I am sure that this question has been asked and answered already.

If a network is asking for a password, it is a secure network and generally not one that is intended for you to use without permission.
Generally, if a network is open, you will easily find it and be able to connect to it without going through the steps of securing a password.
If you are trying to connect say at work, ask your IT specialist to help you and they might be willing to set your phone up with the necessary passcode protocols.

It's like wirelessforever said, if you are trying to connect to a wireless network that is not yours and it is asking for a password, then you shouldn't be connecting to that.
Now if you are trying to connect your BB to your wireless router, and are using encryption on the router, you will need to enter the password that you used to encrypt the connection.
If you don't have a wireless router then you aren't going to be using wifi on your BB.
