I see it being used a lot but im not real sure what it means. Does it give you access to free stuff or access to stuff that you would normaly pay for? or neither?

Unlocking only applies to GSM phones. It means that if you unlock it you can use that phone with any GSM carriers. All you have to do is to insert your sims card into your device. But with the curves it doesn't give you access to free stuff or features that a locked curve has. Exactly the same curve before as before when it was locked its just now you can use it with other GSM carriers since its unlocked.

In lay mans terms If you are refering to a unlocked phone it means that you can use the phones SIM on other carriers that use SIM cards.
