So I have an 8300 (refurb) that I inherited. It does the reboot-at-random thing even after I nuked it form orbit and reloaded the OS (using a work computer).

Since I liked the BB just as a phone (in addition to the other things it does) I did the upgrade thing and got myself a new 8310. Works perfect.

All these OS upgrades and such I want to do on the refurb (as a test of sorts) to avoid issues with my nice, loud, fully functioning, rock solid 8310 running 422170.

I just loaded 45042 for the 8300 on my home computer (which I also use for my 8310).

WinXP installed the 8300 just fine once connected and it shows in Windows Explorer (though not as BB just 'Removable Disk (F: ) ')

DM does not recognize the 8300 (currently at 422166) even with 45042 installed but it does recognize the fact that the unit is connected (it shows the PIN in the lower left).

Remove 45042 and install the 8300 current OS? Then reinstall 45042?

Check to see if you have removed the vendor.xml file located @
    c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

If not do so. Try connecting devices again

yeah, that came to me a few minutes after posting but I was looking in the 8300 java folder lol.

it's in the folder that covers both 8300 and 8310 OS folders. No problem right? (for my 8310 I mean)

    edit:
Well I went ahead and moved it to my Removed Files folder. Recognized right away asking about updating. Hope it doesn't mess with my 8310 lol

It won't. If you look at the bottom left, it'll show you which PIN it is connected to, so you my man are good.
