Hello everyone. I just got this blackberry last week and I am already starting to mess with all these flashing of os.

As stated aboved I started with os v4.5.0.77. After lurking here for a couple of days I decided to try the os I found which was v4.5.0.169:

    forums.crackberry.com/f52/newest-8330-4-5-0-169-cellular-south-official-296697/

After having it all day, I have noticed the chirping noise I dont like it at all. It is very annoying. I do like that the phone seems a lot faster as far as response. No more lag and track ball lag is gone. However the chirping is going to drive me nuts.

I have a few questions, sorry I am new to all this. I followed the link that I posted above and the same instructions they had to install the new os. What is the best os out there available for my curve 8330 (verizon) in terms of over all performance... speed, stability etc...?

On that note when I decide what os to go with that has no issues do I need to erase the os on my phone now? Or do I just do the apploader again with my old back up I performed? With that said do I need to change version of desktop manager as well to match the one I am switching to? How do I exactly do this? I noticed the new os v4.5.0.170, is this the best most recent os for my phone? How about the leaked 5.0 os and how about hybrids... I know it's a lot of questions, a little overwhelmed. Please help.

Also I looked and found the two backed up files I made. One labeled Backup-(2009-10-12).ipd and the other LoaderBackup-(2009-10-12).ipd. One through dm while I was on 4.5.0.77 just as precaution and the other on the same os through the apploader during the process of upgrading to 4.5.0.169. Do these files contain not only data and third part programs but the os itself as well? Thanks.

Edit*** Forgot to add I upgraded to 4.5.0.138 via dm before switching to 4.5.0.169

Those IPD files should only contain your databases (messages, contacts, settings, etc), not apps and definitely not the OS. Restoring a backup won't affect those things.

I'm mobile now, but if you do a search for Newest OS 8330 4.5.0.77, you will find a Telus and Bell download link for the .77 OS.

It's the same version, there is no difference in code. Just remove the vendor.xml file before loading.

You can also try out the hybrid with 4.6/5.0 files. Use the .131 radio as well. In my opinion it is the best os for the 8330. I'm actually using the 5.0 hybrid which I love but miss the gps.

I have no idea what chirping you're talking about but a leap like that should improve speed and if you can describe it better we can probably help you disable it.

Thanks. That is the newest and best os for my curve with stability and optimal performance? The original one I had? I really like how fast the .169 is but the chirping bugs me. Do I need to wipe the phone to downgrade or not? Any difference whether I do or not? Can I just install the os over the new one with apploader? Also is there a different procedure for downgrading? Thanks.

I'm hearing a chirping noise while on a call. Also from time to time during the phone call I hear this slight tone/hum noise in the background during the call. From what I have read only verizon on the .169 are having these issues.

Also how about the new os 4.5.0.170 for 8330. Is this better than the .169 and is the chirping gone for verizon users? thanks again

I haven't heard the chirping while using the .170 radio yet. I used to hear the chirping quite often while using .169.

Sprint will be releasing 4.5.0.175 soon (10/21/09) for download as well.

If you are with Verizon, as I am, I know exactly what chirping sound you are talking about. And yes, it WILL drive you crazy!

I'm mobile right now, so can't send a link, but look at my siggy, and you'll see the hybrid I'm using. Search for it. Believe me, if you are on verizon with an 8330, that's the one you want. (I've tried them ALL - well, just about )

As soon as I'm back at my desk (read that to mean out of bed), I'll update this post with actual links.

    Good luck

You can go on the VZW website to get the download link for the 4.5.0.77 OS.
    Here's the link:
    BlackBerry® Software Updates

Follow the steps to download the 4.5 OS that is approved for use by Verizon. You can use any version that you perfer, but this will get you the 4.5 that you used before, should be 4.5.0.77.

Does the hybrid return the call timer I lost going from .77 to .138?

Yes, it does have a call timer, on the call screen, right next to the handset/speakerphone icon (see picture). I hope this is the timer you are referring to, as I personally do not use a timer.

This is a link to the Hybrid:

And these are links to threads that I ALWAYS have open whenever playing with my OS:

Pls feel free to come back with any other questions.

    Good luck!

Sorry, this link will only offer you 4.5.0.138 which isn't a good OS, IMO.

I vote for the .160/.131 hybrid. I've been running the hybrid for a while now. I started with .77, tried .160 and then tried .169. The hybrid is the only one that worked great. Think I will keep it for a long while. You can find it here: http://forums.crackberry.com/f95/hyb...0-131-a-242109

This is the exact same Hybrid to which I refer and link the OP to.

I'm glad this confirms my recommendation, and it is also a very good endorsement of this excellent Hybrid.

All Curve 8330 users on the Verizon network should give it a try!

What is wrong with OS .138? I just upgraded to it? Are there problems or something? Isn't that the latest "official" latest Verizon OS for the 8330?

What kind of improvements do you get from the os upgrade, I know I've asked before but never got a specific answer I am still on the original that the phone caMe with. Will changing the os void the warranty on the phone (probably stupid ques) I there a huge difference with the speed when on internet? If so how much faster?
