My wife and I both have a Curve 8310. I updated my phone last night to the latest OS without a problem. My question is how do I update my wifes phone without messing anything up. My wife has different programs loaded on her phone. Our contacts are obviously different also. Will this be a problem?

Doesn't matter. You can even use the same OS you downloaded.

I'm thinking the backup/restore part of the operation is keyed by PIN, so DM is going to be able to tell them apart.

You'll be fine. Just do a backup and backup of third party apps beforehand.
