No, you don't absolutely need it. I have done several with the
cable from my printer or whatever else has been lying around.
All of the upgrades were successful regardless of what cable
I used.
Same here, have used several USB cables and all went well. The only time I've been suggested to use a stock USB cable was when I was trying to troubleshoot an uncooperative dead blackberry and I was trying everything. Not even the stock cable helped me on that one.
You should be good to go. Just remember after you've done the upgrade, best to leave your berry coonected until it finishes its long initial start-up cycle...
