I would like to see what apps may be running and be able to close them, something similar to Windows Task manager.

On BlackBerry, it is called Switch Applications.
You will find it on the bottom of each Menu list.
You can also access the Application Switcher by pressing both the ALT key and the back button at the same time. The little screen will pop up and you can scroll through the open apps. This is neat because you can access it this way no matter what program or screen you are on.

And those apps can be closed from there? Thanks
No, you would then have to switch to the App and exit it properly.
I've noticed that certain apps don't actually close though. Like BBM always shows up no matter if I go into the program and close it

yes, unless you uninstall it, BBM will always be there. Also phone, browser, homescreen, and messages will always be there.
Just tried that and none of them "open" wouldnt close, so i'd personally scratch that mcll. keep looking and tell us what you find please.
There is an app that is currently in open beta called task manager. Just search. Its free now as a beta.
Very simple and handy. One button push and you can close all closeable apps.

Can't you just hold down the blackberry menu button and get the list of whats open then close them from there.
Yep. You can't close them all with one button push. You have to go into each and scroll down and close each.

The "switch application" will also open by holding down the BB button.
Just make it a habit to go into the menu and close each app before you go on to something else, that way the phone will always run to its full potential.
I guess another option could be to install the app QuickPull.
