I am just wondering, since because now they have the Curve 89XX series. Is there really a point to having the Curve 83XX series? I heard RIM is going to discontinue the older curves from someone (I know, not the most reliable source), and I was just wondering if this is true? It seems to make sense though. Does Blackberry have any future plans to discontinue the 83XX in the near future? Thanks,
Likely to happen at some point, but I wouldn't think before a major OS upgrade that wouldn't work well on the older BB's. RIM continues to slowly added models with enhanced features, and at some point they will start outselling the Pearl and Curve.
the 8830 and the 8330 will continue to be a good business tool. With that said, I agree there is to large of a user base, I would say 5-10 yrs it will be phased out, but not over night.
The 8100 was already phased out. The 8110/8120/8130 are not at the 3 year mark yet. The 8800/8820 is EOL now (or will be very soon), 8300 is already gone, next is the 8310/8320

Agreed. A side from that, the 8330 is one of the best selling BlackBerry models of all time, and will continue to be a cash cow for the company. They will begin to phase these out as soon as the sales drop drastically.
i just got my 8320 back in October 08 and now since i have an 8900... i dont think the 8320 series and up wont be disconntinued for awhile since the 8320 and 8330 are top selling phones...
Take a look at how they get down..... You make an original and then you upgrade it...... Perfected, ride the coat tails and start working on something else...... perfect it....... now phase the old one out....... start again......
We hopefully have a long time before they phase us out and call us the old skool.......
This isn't a nintendo ds so don't worry. Besides, look at the Wing. Out for years, but yeah it's the only phone of its kind in the T-Mobile (USA) line-up. With the 83xx, it will give people a cheaper alternative from the 8900 and still be packed full of features.

I would hope that they wouldn't discontinue it, but I'm sure they will sometime, things are always getting better, I'm just glad it's still around for now, it really is a fantastic device!
I think even if RIM stops making 83xx they will be backward compatible so nobody needs to sell their phones. I think RIM really needs to rollout some 3G handsets. I think right now its only Storm (CDMA), Bold (GSM). Blackberries are already fast with 2G they will be much faster with 3G more good streaming experience ;-)
Who cares if they discontinue it... It'll still work and accessories will be around for years.
Exactly. Why worry about the 83xx being discontinued? It doesn't matter if it's discontinued tomorrow; you can keep your phone for as long as it serves you well. Upgrade only if you really want a newer phone.
There'll be plenty of 83xx on Craigslist or eBay if you can't replace your broken Curve with a new one. I kept my old Nokia phone (with a black-and-white screen) for 8 years and I was still able to find replacements on Craigslist.
