I have noticed that, if I do not open new messages for a while, the red flashing LED stops after some time. How can I set it so that the LED keeps flashing until I open the new messages?

The new message alert LED timer is not user adjustable. It blinks for 15 minutes after a new message or missed call, then resets and won't blink again until the next new message. You can't change the time or the behavior.
The LED will stop flashing after 15 minutes unless you receive a new email, message, etc. If you want the LED to keep reminding you, you should check out BB Alerts (you have to buy it). Just google "BB Alerts" to find it.
