I'm doing the OTA upgrade/update to 4.5.0.175 (I think) on verizon. I started the process and for the past 3+ hours, the phone has been stuck @ 26% overall backup process and the current database is sms messages and that's stuck @ 98%. The elapsed time keeps increasing in 10 second intervals, but when it reaches 60 minutes, it resets back to 00:00. I have connected it to a power supply, but that hasn't changed anything. I'm afraid to pull the battery and lose all of my contacts. What should my next step be?

Am I doomed? Also, this is my first time doing this since getting the phone about a year ago.

    Thanks!

Have you at least made any recent backups?

You MIGHT not lose anything by disconnecting at this stage of the upgrade because it backs up everything before upgrading the OS.

This is exactly why I never upgrade anything ota if at all possible. You can do the same upgrade by connecting to desktop manager and click Check for updates, AFTER making a backup.

It sounds like you might have a bad SMS message an it is stuck. Even if you disconnect and you lose everything. You can at the very minimum recover your BB. Whether you lose your contacts depends on luck an if you have a recent backup.

I've never backed it up. My desktop crashed after getting the bb and now i'm using a mac. I'm assuming that the desktop manager works w/ mac as well?

Is there any way to stop the backup process? Every time I do a battery pull due to the backup freezing, it automatically begins the process once the bb reboots.

There is a Mac version of desktop manager, but you might have a problem getting dm to detect your pin if your BB keeps trying to do the ota backup/upgrade upon rebooting.

Is your BB within the 12 month warranty? You might have to take it in to Verizon to get a replacement. In the future, you could also use Google Sync to back up your contacts and calendar automatically over the air. Then the most you would ever lose in a situation like this is your messages and email on your BB (and passwords, etc. if you use those apps). That's why you should be making regular backups with desktop manager.

I left the bb alone for a little while and it was able to finish the OTA upgrade. I have also gotten the DM and have backed up my bb.

    Thanks for your help!

Glad to hear everything is good now.

Make it a habit to do regular backups. Remember, you will lose everything since your latest backup, so let that be your guide as to how often you back up.

Or, load the Google Sync app and let that stuff be done automatically (contacts/calendar).
