OK, I finally took the plunge and bought my first smart phone. It's a BB 8330 and my cellular provider is Cellular South. I've found my OS to be Version 4.3.0.17 it's dated 11/12/07.
I'm sure there is a newer OS out there somewhere, could someone point me to it and tell me what benefits I would get by upgrading to it?
I've allready learned a ton of great stuff just reading here, so thanks in advance to all of you very helpful people.

4.5 will give you html email and the ability to record video. Follow the instructions on the thread or the one in my signature for proper upgrade/downgrade.
