The latest officially released OS for the 8330 is found in a sticky at the top of the 8330 forum and includes instructions for installing it. Installing an OS is not difficult, but it is not trivial either. If you don't know what you are doing you can easily make your phone inoperative. That's usually recoverable, but a hassle. You would probably be better off using your 8330 for a while before attempting to upgrade the OS.

    Correction.
    The newest is 4.5.0.186
    That sticky is wrong.
I feel like admins forgot us 8330 owners.

Actually the newest for 8330 is 5.0. Something. Something.

    So yeah.

5.0.0.438 is stickied. I forgot about the distinction between 8330 and 8330m devices. The OP will need to know which she has. Look in Options / Status. If you see an MEID, you have an 8330m.

This is an interesting thread. The comments have basically been "look at the stickies at the top of the forum". While that seems like good advise, we already know the OP may not know if they have an 8330 or an 8330m, that's the first confusion. The second confusion is this; there are two stickies that reference the 8330, one is for Boost Mobile and one for Sprint. How does this impact, say, the Verizon user? And both claim to be the "newest".

Add to this, one poster mentions the the 4.5.0.186 sticky is wrong.

Whew, no wonder there is so much confusion.

Wow, I just found out I have a 8330m. I never knew that. My Curve is from Verizon. I did as Jeff suggested & see that I have MEID in my status menu. Is there any big difference between 8330 and 8330m? Are all Verizon Curves 8330m's? Thanks for any info.

    Lol.
    No you don't have m.
    VZW has 8330.
You have to look in options to see if you have an 8330m
all 8330s have meids or something.
    You can download OS 5.0

Big difference is the MMS for the 2.
8330m sees it differently than the 8330.
Although some people with OS 5.0 report seeing the 8330m MMS.

And 8330m has no 5.0 as of yet.
    Sadly.

    DC & Larry-

Thanks for the info! For a moment I thought I had the "m" - now I know for sure that I don't.

I'm not in the 5.0 OS camp anyway due to a number of issues. I'm happy with the 4.5.0.186 w/.131 radio file. Thanks again.

i'm also wondering what the latest os for a verizon 8330 would be. my friend's phone needs an update - or at least i think that will correct some flakyness thats going on with his phone. if i can install a 5.0 os on it that would be great, but i'm not sure where to find that. thanks in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Determine which phone/carrier you have. Then look at the top of the first page of this forum. You'll see the sticky that has your latest update.

yes, i know about the stickies...

the phone in question is an 8330 on the verizon network. for which i know a sprint os will work. i see a link to 4.5.0.175 - which people are now saying there is a newer .186 version out. these are still 4.5 and not 5.0. within this thread there is a reference to there being a 5.0 series os - 5.0.0.438. this is shown to be for boost mobile, which i am not sure fully supports all the features found.

so i was wondering if anyone on verizon can chime in here and tell me what they feel is the best os for this phone...?

Verizon's release of 5.0 for the 9630 is severely flawed. Given that history, and the fact the 8330 has barely enough memory to run 5.0, I'd be hesitant to try 5.0. I can't tell you a specific 4.5 to run, but any 4.5 that's been out for a while is likely more stable and safer than 5.0. That's just an opinion; others may report better results. I don't have an 8330 to experiment with.

jeffh - that's what i was thinking too. i can see "higher" level devices running 5.0 but after reading through some threads and knowing that this person is going to want their phone to remain quick, stable and problem free i'm going to go with the latest 4.5.0.186 and see how it goes. thanks for your advice...

I have a 8330 that has been running 5.0 for awhile now. It does seem to be laggy at times. I had to keep the list of programs i use on it small. I deleted ALOT of stuff that i dont need. I do a reboot once a week and it runs good. The only buggy issue i have out of it is when i click to delete multiple texts it will leave a blank box behind after deleting them all. Then i have to go through a delete the empty box each different person has. Other than that i like the 5.0 verison i have on my phone.

Well, on Verizon with the 4.5.0.175, your friend could be hearing the loud screeching sound that has plagued many vzw 8330's. You should check into the posts by Xliderider regarding the 4.5.0.186 w/ radio files from the 4.5.0.131. He explains how to make the change, step-by-step & has saved many here, including myself. Good luck!

I have an 8330 on verizon and I'm running the 5.0.0.438 os. It's not as bad as people make it seem. The major issue I've seen is the memory leaking but the phone runs well with the os. I do a soft reset every 3-4 days, the threaded sms, individual contact tones, ring+vibrate are small but they're enough for me to put up with this for now. At least until they release the new tour.
