I am a new blackberry user - recently acquired a verizon Wireless Curve. I am looking for advice on how to best manage files / keep it running fast / and to manage emails & messages. All info is much appreciated.

you can save files to a memory card and not use the memory of ya berry and also you can use this app to zip folders http://bbsoftware.weebly.com/uploads...y_explorer.zip
you can download it and add it via desktop mangr.

I think its also best to use MS Outlook as well, so you can keep/archive email messages on your PC and keep only a few days worth on your Curve. Plus, you get the added benefit of synching the BB to Outlook so you have consistent Calendars, Address Books, etc...

As far as managing emails and messages go to message->options->general options->SMS and Email inboxes: Seperate

This separates the two and makes it much easier to manage.
