Facebook, Viigo, or any browser push app sometimes creates those symptoms. If the battery pull doesn't fix it and you have any of those apps, try uninstalling.

That's happened to me before...it turned out to be caused from the Facebook application. I uninstalled it, and the hourglass was gone. I reinstalled it later and it's been fine ever since.
