So I am looking for a free messenger (has to have aim/msn and yahoo) that will allow me to group chat. Like if a group of friends are talking and they invite you and the on going chat is all in one window. I know the Verizon software will open 1 window per person in chat and it's crazy.

That should do the trick for you. It supports chat but I am not sure if that is going to do the same as what your other program did or if it will show all the people's conversations in the same window. Let us know how it works for you!

Does Instango run off the data plan or text?

With most carriers all messengers use the data plan.
