No version of Windows can "natively" support files with the
.ipd extension. They are meant to be read by DM for backup
    and restore purposes.

There is this app that will allow you to view and edit the contacts.

I cannot get the web to open the file choices. If you routinely cannot view the file how do you know everything is as it should be.I must be honest here I am a blind man when it comes to electronics but am patiently working my way through it. thanks M

First - No need to be sorry
    Second - Welcome to CrackBerry
Third - I don't understand what you are asking in that last post.

There isn't any way to view the contents of a backup file to verify it with the BlackBerry software, or with any windows app like notepad. You can use Amber ABC that AG pointed you to.

What I was saying is I would think that you would routinely verify that saved msgs, pictures etc were there. It looks like there are programs you can merge files so if you are doing upgrade just back it all up to have a safe copy and then soldier on.If you cannot verify the integrity of the info in the file other than pop up that states it saved it seems worrisome to me.Now you must understand that I am likely making it harder than it is.Thanks M

Everything on the phone in device memory is part of the Backup.

I just opened an old .ipd file with WordPad and even though there
are a lot of cryptic characters, I can see what apps, fonts, etc...
    were backed up.

I can also read the contents of the open BBM's that were there
at the time as well as the emails I had not deleted. I never
save text messages, so I don't know but I suspect they would
    also be there.

Not a perfect solution. It never occurred to me to look for this
as my restores never failed, but now I'm curious.
