I can not use my USB cable to upload music onto my phone what is going on? Do i need to download some sort of software or the blackberry desktop manager ?

I was once able to upload music & movies via USB but now I can not

You need to enable mass storage mode when you plug the blackberry into the computer via usb. If it doesn't recognize the blackberry you will need to make sure the computer installs the usb storage drivers for the device. Once the computer recognizes the device as another removable drive you can simply drag and drop files to it.

It is now working. Everything was on except the auto detect

You can also have the device prompt you to do this when you plug it in. Go to options>media card>auto enable mass storage mode when connected: Yes, No, Prompt.
