- I had to exchange my curve under warranty.
Before I returned mhy old one, I backed up my address book, thinking I could just restore it to my new one.
When I try to restore the address book, First its grayed out but if I click on it anyway and choose the restore option, I get the following message:
Cannot Restore read-only database on device.
I've been searching the forums for a while, and just can't figure out how to restore my address book. Maybe I just didn't search hard enough.
Thanks!11-04-08 07:26 AMLike 0 - Just saw this. I did the same thing. Once I got my replacement I went in and did a restore.
I had lots of problems.
TMO tech help had me go Options> Advanced Options> Host Routing Table >(left click) Register Now.
everything started working in a few minutes. good luck11-04-08 10:36 AMLike 0 -

- Does Dm allow you to do anything else? Load apps, transfer music? If it doesn't allow you to do anything then it may not be recognizing the blackberry properly. Try downloading DM 4.6:
BlackBerry - BlackBerry Desktop and Device Software Download Sites11-04-08 08:03 PMLike 0 - When I went to restore with a new berry and clicked restore, it brought up my saved file and I was able to select my address book. You could try the advanced option. The box on the left will be empty. When you click the file option on top of the left hand box, it will take you to the where the back up file is stored -- or you will have an option to browse for it, and you can click it to move it into the box. Then select it in the box and click the move arrows to put it in the device database box, you will be given the opportunity to replace the existing address book with the old one. Click yes.

Cannot Restore read-only database on device11-04-08 08:14 PMLike 0 - 1) Unplug device then go to Options\Service books
2) Delete the "Desktop Sync" service book
3) Plug device back in and open the Desktop manager
4) Go to "restore" and you should now be able to restore all of your previously dimmed out items.
The service book gets recreated after the restore is performed -- if I remember correctly.
You can try this..I had the same problem as you did and it worked for me!!11-22-08 06:59 PMLike 0 - i guess it worked for him/her since he/she didnt come back?
kind of curious if it did
comon liz00518 let us know12-02-08 07:31 AMLike 0 - No that didn't work..... The key here is that I was running 4.5 something when I did the back up... And I tried to restore it to a device running 4.2 something..... When I upgraded the new phone to 4.5 I was able to restore the database
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com12-02-08 08:07 AMLike 0 - My problem is similar, but I'm not getting any errors. I go to advanced and pull up one of my backups but I cant actually select any of the databases. It shows the empty databases on my phone, and the full databases from the backup file, but it wont actually select any from either side, and none of the transfer arrows show up. I was trying to update my OS, laptop battery died, bricked the phone, recovered it, and now I cant restore my backup! When I try to use the restore button, DM just grays out and doesnt do anything. I need to restore my contacts...01-27-09 08:24 PMLike 0
- I've been on a that page aswell.. Well it copied the contacts over the the rest, but never restored them. Just replaced every contact created after the resore process with a blank one.
Be sure to keep that backup your restoring from. These few easy steps might make it a bit more difficult.06-02-09 07:24 AMLike 0 - I just went through the same crap the original poster was talking about. Angerangeranger then a little bit of patience and I figured it out. I guess this will teach me to not backup my phone for 6 weeks Still, 43 recovered contacts out of about 90 is a heck of a lot better than 0/90.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com01-09-10 04:47 PMLike 0 - I'm having this same problem, but "Desktop Sync" isn't in the service books for me to delete. I'm not activated on BES and this is a new device that I just activated on BIS...
Also, I've confirmed that "wireless sync" is not on within the address book options.... Any ideas?02-01-10 07:04 PMLike 0 - Same problem here....
Originally backed up all the important stuff and thought that I had successfully restored everything to new BB. Noticed today that about half my address book contacts were missing on new BB. Went back to original backup byt the DM will not let me restore the Address Book - it's greyed out and locked as read-only.
Very frustrating.03-30-10 08:15 AMLike 0 - Hey guys -
I encountered this problem myself, while attempting to update my OS. Luckily, with a little bit of investigating, I found a solution that hopefully works for you as well -
1. Open Address Book on Blackberry
2. Click the menu button and select "Options"
3. Under "Contact Lists" will hopefully be one of your e-mail accounts you have configured with your Blackberry - click on it
4. Turn "Wireless Synchronization" to "No"
5. Go back into DM and hopefully the "Address Book" will no longer be greyed out and can be transferred onto the device!
Let me know if this helped!03-30-10 02:20 PMLike 3 - That worked perfectly thank you. I just did a security wipe and could not restore my address book and turned off the wireless sync. and was able to restore my contacts using desktop manager.03-31-10 07:05 PMLike 0
- I tried several ways, turnning off wirless sync for address book and all that, but in compbination with those...DELETING THE SERVICE BOOK overrides all restrictions and you tell it what it CAN do. THANK YOU06-02-10 12:12 PMLike 0
