So I ordered my curve off ebay (used) and I just got my curve today (8320 T-mobile). It was claimed to be working okay and everything...but not so much.

Basically, when its on, it will work fine, but occasionally (like anywhere from every 2-5 minutes, or sometimes more) it will turn off and show the red light, and turn back on to the hourglass and proceed to turn on.

I have been able to txt, make phone calls, even browse over wifi, but it will still decide to black out and turn off occasionally.

I have, done a hard reset, called t-mobile, they had me do a wipe and a software upgrade/load and still same prob. When I did the software load, I did choose to delete all applications and app data before loading, and it made it through that process ok.

The "blackberry expert" at t-mobile said the software load should fix the prob, but if not there are more options?!? Anyway, they are closed now, and I'm still frustrated.

Does anyone know of a fix before I try and send my phone back to the seller?

    Thanks!

UPDATE: Yep, tried a new working battery, still experienced the shutting off problem. I also took it to a tmo store and they said that it is probably a hardware issue with the phone.

Also, it was the software version 4.2.xx (it was the newest one available from tmo)

So, I contacted the seller on ebay. Seller refunded what I paid, plus the shipping, and the shipping that it cost me to send it back.

Ordered another and should be here today tomorrow!...hopefully better luck with this one!

one more note...the only activity that I can do to get it to shut off is by plugging it in to my comp like I am going to sync it with BD, but it gives me an error message saying no application something or other and once i click ok it turns off.

otherwise, I've been browsing the net over wifi for the last 5-10 minutes problem free (with no sim card in)!!! I'm so frustrated lol

yes, but only for wifi browsing. I guess there were a few times when I had the phone on with no sim and it would turn off on me

Ask TMO for a new SIM card and see if that helps.

pretty sure that's not the prob, considering it still happens when the sim card isn't in, and my sim card works just fine in my pearl! thanks tho

If the device is less than a year old, you could ask for a warranty replacement.

yea, considering I got it off ebay as mentioned in the op, prob not gonna happen. the ebay auction does accept returns fortunately.

think it could be a battery problem? I actually know of someone else who has a curve and I might try their battery.

Do you have a media card installed? Try removing it and see what happens.

Try using JL CMDER to completely wipe the device clean of an OS (should say error 507 when starting which means there is no OS found), then reload the OS.

Well I already did reload the OS and I did select to delete all applications and all application data, so is this method really much different?

Plus I talked to a blackberry specialist at T-mobile again and they said at this point its prob a hardware issue. It might be the battery, but not too likely. I'm gonna stop by a t-mobile on my way home and try one of their new batteries...if that doesn't work, then I'll be returning!!

What they had you, and what I told you to do are different. When they gave you instructions, they did not have you obliterate the OS from the device. Which meant whatever the problem was could still exist. If after obliterating the OS from the device, and reloading it, the problem still persists, then it is undoubtedly a hardware defect which will only be solved by replacing the handset.

I think the collective community here on CB knows more than almost any tech expert that you speak to on the phone.

yes, I know, and I already have a high amount of respect for those here on CB.

but yea, referring to what you said, as far as I know, I did completely delete the OS and reload it...I got the 507 screen and everything...it took prob 20 to 30 mins. that's the correct process right?

    thanks!

yea I somewhat tried that...good idea tho...

one of the guys i was on the phone with, i told him all my probs, etc, and he was about to send me a new one...a new pearl that is (my current phone) because that was on my account. I tried telling him i just bought it at a store, yada yada, he couldn't do it. but I might try what you suggested, no hurt in trying!

I am wondering tho, if I go on t-mobile.com and change my phone to the curve, can they see when I got it and all? or will they just nicely send me a new one? :-)

I am an electronic engineer and what this sounds like is something internally is shorting out causing the phone to go into reset.

to test this I would press on specific places on the phone and see if you can get the problem to occur more than once in one area.

If you can... then there is a internal problem.

Sorry I can not be of more help on the warranty stuff or exchanging.

If the phone is defective, and it has not been long, I would ask PayPal to help you get your money back on it.

That is unless the seller added the clause at the bottom on the post about "as is" ect....

    Good luck :|

yea thanks for the insight...not sure if I can emulate the electrical prob because it will just happen when it sits there.

but I already contacted the seller and he is refunding everything plus return shipping :-)

looking at buying another one today...hopefully better luck!

    thanks for all the help

Starting from a 507, it was fresh build.

You are getting good advise both from T-Mobile and from the crew here. edit: maybe next time.

Just to be sure we are all on the same page, please check Options / About and verify you have installed v4.2.2.180. That is the official OS from T-Mobile and we can rule out all kinds of beta related issues.

After a full charge, you can check Options / Status and verify the Battery state. It should be 100%.

If the fault returns, check the battery state again. A defective battery would explain the symptoms.

Thats good.... maybe not buy from ebay, is it saving you that much?

I was able to get AT&T to give me the special price even though I was not eligible for an upgrade yet. Brand new in the box.... shiny and new

BTW, OT question but.... your not in Texas by any chance are you?

i've tried that basically, and stays 100%. and the OS is up to date too.
I'm just fed up and gonna return it, I don't want a buggy phone. I'm just lookin for a diff one now!

Get a new battery. You need to find a good quality one (not off ebay - I have 2 from there and they are problematic).

Your problem is that the battery is failing anf when the phone suddenly asks for power e.g. when it want to 'talk' to the mast, the instantaneous battery voltage drops and the phone says 'Goodbye'.
