I have had my 8310 Curve for only a few weeks so am still learning it but LOVE it! noticed on the top of it there is a GPS logo with a small icon looking like a satellite.

1. How do I use the GPS functionality on the 8310?
2. Do I need a data plan to sue it or is it a TRUE GPS?

Even if it is a true GPS you can't see maps without downloading data--unless you have a full set of maps loaded on a microSD card.

Thats right. IMHO To use the full capabilities of your BB you need a data plan.
