    I just got a blackberry 8310
    I upgraded from a sony ericson w810i

On the Sony Ericson phone, there was an application called Flashlight, which used the light from the flash of the camera..

Is there any thing similar for the blackberry?

The video recorder one works pretty well.. but is there any application that does it directly without having to go through the recorder?

I downloaded the Freelight software but it was only using the LED's from my notification blinker as the light source..

I use the video recorder (with left convenience key). In video option, put flash always on so you dont even need to be recording to have the flash.

What would be the difference? Either way you'd have to go and find the application and launch it or set it to a convenience key. If you just set the Video Recorder to have the flash always on, like mentioned, then all you have to do is assign Video Recorder to a side key or launch it from the main menu (it has it's own icon, no need to go through camera) and you'll have the light.
