I have been pretty disgusted with AT&T for blocking usage of BB maps since I got my Curve. It's an obvious ploy to get us to pay for their subscription GPS service.

Well, an interesting thing happened after my upgrade to OS 4.5.0.110. When I reinstalled Nav4All, it would not work. I tried a couple of times, then started searching for another app that would work. I like Google Maps OK, but still not quite what I wanted. I also tried amAze GPS, which works pretty well for me also. Then I stumbled upon the fact that BB maps is working for me now! I had to install using the DM rather than OTA, but it is working now! And I got it from RIM's site at https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...8A619C79EDDD62

To give credit where credit is due, I found the link and the hint about installing via PC on an ATT phone at JerryD's Mini Version Tracker - PinStack.com Forums This site is a GREAT collection of BB apps, and I recommend it to all. I've had it bookmarked for a while, but just went to it the other day to find another program that I forgot to back up before my upgrade.

Now I have three working (and FREE) GPS apps instead of one. Now I just have to play with them all and figure out which one I like the best.

Anyone else tried to use BB maps on AT&T since their update?

    Manny64,

have you tried uninstalling maps from your blackberry and then reinstalling using the link I provided? It has to be done via DM rather than OTA, but it worked for me.

You are very welcome, paramore. I've received so much help and great information since I got my BB a couple of months or so ago that it feels good to be able to give back to the community.

I installed it today and it seems to be working. I had to to some shuffling of some of the .cod files to finally get it to work, but it appears at this point to be a success. Thanks for the link...I had really wanted to give it a try but AT&T had us blocked...

    Hey, LuvMyBB,

I don't want to presume on your free time, but if you have a few minutes, would it be possible to post exactly how you shuffled your COD files? I just got lucky on this one. I'm sure there's lots of others out there like me that are still learning and don't know a COD from a fish. They could surely benefit from your knowledge.

    Thanks,

    Morgoth

I used the link from Morgoth and I as well can see Blackberry Maps in the apps but cannot find a icon or link to open it. I tried loading original BB maps when I upgraded to 110 and then deleted from phone (not DM) and before loading link and no luck. I will try deleting with DM and then re-loading link. We'll see what happens. Any other suggestions.

Okay, I'll try and highlight what I did. I did it on my work laptop and I don't have that with me at the moment...I'm on my personal laptop.

Disclaimer: I can't in any way warranty this information...it's just something I did based on knowledge learned here and my own knowledge and experiences. If you're not sure, don't do it. And if you do do it, back up everything beforehand.

Here is a summary of what I did, and it all seemed to work out okay. If any of the mods or other knowledgeable members see anything wrong or have other suggestions, feel free to jump in.

    1. I made sure the original BB Maps app was removed/uninstalled using DM (the one that ATT users can't use.)
    2. I used Morgoth's link and downloaded the file.
    3. I extracted the .zip file to a Java folder in the loader files area. This is the one in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Shared\Loader Files\(device name)\Java\(new java folder)

(So far, none of this is really new as far as the location of these files and what they're used for. This is all in the "increasing your memory" thread that has been so helpful.)

    4. I copied the .cod files from the new Java folder to the original Java folder (see 3.) Note I copied, not moved, just in case I might need to identify them later. They won't hurt anything staying in that new Java folder.
    5. Here was the kicker. Three or four of the files had newer versions that already existed in the original Java folder. I believe these were there for the original (and heretofore unusable) BB Maps app. I don't recall the file names exactly because they're on my other computer, but you'll see them when you try to copy them over. Don't replace them during the copy process above, just keep the original files for now.
    6. The first time I tried it, after everything finished, I went back to the DM to install the BB Maps app. It has kind of a different name, like L1.8 BB Maps or something weird like that. It appeared to install properly, but when I tried to run it on my device, I got an error that one of those files I mentioned in 5. was a different version/date. So it wouldn't run.
    7. I checked the other apps on my BB to make sure none of them used these .cod files, and I didn't find any. (Go to Options/Advance/Applications, then select each one to see the .cod files they use at the bottom of the screen.)
    8. Since I didn't see any other uses, I moved those three or four original .cod files with the later date to my "Removed Modules" folder. (Always make one of these folders and move the .cod files you don't want here...don't just delete them, in case you need them later.)
    9. Once these were moved, I went back to that second Java folder and finished copying those three or four older versions .cod files to the original Java folder, like I had tried to do in 4./5. above.
    10. Once I had done that, I went back to the DM to install it. Sure enough, BB Maps (with that funny name I think) was there for me to install in the AppLoader.
    11. I installed it and it works like a charm now. Everything else does, too.

Note that I am using the 4.5.0.110 ATT release for the OS. If you are using a different OS, I can't say that the above would work.

I know this is long and rambling, but I hope it might help some. Good luck, and let me know how it goes if you decide to give it a try.

Actually I think ATT disabled BB maps cause they knew the app sucked and they wanted us to use googlemaps instead. All this trouble you went through and trust me, it wasn't worth it. The search on bbmaps is horrible. If you search for a place that isn't within maybe a 10 mile radius of you, it will not show up even if you look using the place's name or address. I was 13 miles away from a restaurant I wanted to go to and searched for it on my way there. It never came up in he search until I was literally around the corner. Needless to say bbmaps was gone after only a couple uses. It's not worth the space it takes up...

Perhaps it's just the way I am. BBMaps is a standard feature for most crackberry users. I refuse to be liimited on a phone I am paying data for, and own. It is MY phone. ATT is not renting it to me, therefore they should have no right to tell me what to install on my phone, as long as it does not harm their network.

I use BBmaps, Google Maps, and also Live Search. BBmaps is not that great. I just do it out of prinicple.

Same way they used to force you to use the SMS version of AIM.

These companies need to realize that users WILL get around restrictions. Especially the dedicated mad geniuses like LuvMyBB. Thanks again man!

I'm with you, mrsubway. Nothing makes me want to do a thing more than a gigantic company telling me I can't. Especially when they are telling me I can't do that thing with a product I OWN! That's part of the reason I updated my OS before AT&T released their version.

I agree that Google maps is much better than BB maps. And Nav4All is better even than that. But it's the principle of the thing. Until I run out of memory, BBMaps is here to stay.

Hmmmm.... 'Dedicated mad geniuses'. That's a good way to describe people like LuvMyBB. You can't call them evil geniuses because they use their powers for good rather than evil. Of course, AT&T might have another opinion.

Glad my incoherent rambling was able to help someone and didn't brick anyone's phone...yet!

As for being a "mad genius", my wife might agree with the former.

And I agree about the principle of the matter. I like the freedom of being able to try what I want and decide for myself, especially on something that is *designed* for BB. I have gmaps too and tend to like it better, but I'm going to give them both a good workout before I decide for sure.

Didn't work. Still no "Maps" icon.

But then, the instructions weren't very clear about which files to copy where. I just removed the "net_rim_bb_lbs_ ..." files from the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8310-v4.5.0.110_P2.7.0.90\Java" directory and replaced them with the similar files from the BB Maps that I downloaded from BlackBerry via the link.

Does anyone know if I did it correctly?
