I've searched and searched and not found any answers. At least none that make any sense. So....sorry for anyone that's sick of hearing about it, but I'm re-hatching the Google Maps discussion.
I've got T-mobile service. Email only plan. No internet. But I have a wi-fi connection. I am able to download the application, but when I go to run it, the phone freezes completely. Battery in-out is the only way to get it back.
Funny thing is that I know someone with the exact same phone and it works fine. Only difference is that he's got the internet plan attached to his. How can it be wi-fi if it downloads successfully. I don't know much about the google maps, but I was under the impression that it downloads it to your phone and from there on doesn't require internet access to use it. Might be wrong about that.
But why won't it work!!????
UPDATE: Okay I take that back. He has the same package as I do, email only, no internet. It's the same damn phone! I don't get it.

Indeed you are. ;-)
You need a data plan in order to use Google Maps. The maps are dynamically downloaded to your device using the data plan.
My friend does not have a dataplan on his but his is working. I know he USED to. But not at the time he downloaded google maps. And not while he's using it.

<confused>
That's not what you said originally.
"Only difference is that he's got the internet plan attached to his. "
If that's not accurate, and he doesn't have a data plan... then I suspect he's paying for data per/KB and he can expect an ENORMOUS bill at the end of the month.
T-mobile doesn't charge per KB usage. (You might not have seen the update at the bottom of my original message where it says my friend doesn't have a data plan. And actually he said that phone/contract has never had a data plan. He leaves a wi-fi area and the Google Maps still work.
Swap SIM cards with him for a little while.
If your SIM card gets Google Maps on his device... then you've at least narrowed your issue down to device settings.
If Google Maps doesn't work with your SIM in his device... then you've narrowed it to a provisioning issue.
I assume you've checked the TCP settings on your device to see if they differ from your friend's?
Options > Advanced Options > TCP
Don't kill the messenger. He DOES have internet without wifi (though he's not paying for it shhhh). Sorry for the bad info. So back to the original question which I believe you answered. No internet package, no google maps, right?

(PS, both our TCP settings were completely blank)
I have the exact same problem with the exact same phone!
I have the internet plan and my Google Maps freezes my phone when I try to run it. Worked when i downloaded it, then started being ******** so i erased it, reset my phone, and reinstalled. Then said it had no network privileges even though it did. So i did the same routine, and now it won't open at all.
That's weird. It shouldn't work without a data plan. I should know coz when I had my 8320, I didn't have a data plan for a month and did try Gmaps through wifi and it was a no go. Called Tmo and verified that it won't work coz Gmaps need to download the map data and will pass through their network. A week ago I got the data plan and it worked.
I'm not saying you got your info about your friend screwed up but if it works for him w/o a data plan then good for him.

I've been searching everywhere for a gps/maps solution that does not need data. I had tomtom on my nokia e61i and that connected to my bluetooth gps receiver and needed no data. Too bad no tomtom for blackberry. I'm sure the 8320 can handle an app with maps built in so I don't see why apps rely on data so much. Must be a conspiracy
