Like on the 8830, is there a way to have the screen get brighter without going into options and changing the setup?
My 8830 had a button on top to do this

Yeah, put your finger over the LED window, there is a light sensor in there. When you block the light getting to the sensor, the screen brightens.

Are you sure? Doesn't the screen get brighter when there's actual light shining on it to avoid glare and so you can actually see the screen? Blocking the LED should make it dimmer.
