    Hello all,

I purchased an 8330 and service with Sprint after having had another 8330 with Boost. The Boost 8330 has the option to change the sms conversation style from Bubbles to Stripes, and defaults to Bubbles which I really like. The Sprint 8330 does not.
The Boost OS version is 5.0.0.438, and the Sprint version is 4.5.0.186. Is there anything that can be done about it, other than buying a 3rd party app? Can the the Boost OS be flashed onto the Sprint 8330, or patched? Alternately, can I tell Sprint that I want the Boost 8330 to be put on my Sprint service?
Sorry for all the questions, just trying to learn what my options are. Thanks in advance.

    Al

After some reading I see that the newer OS can be put on the Sprint 8330. Time for some more reading.

i think if your phone is a 8330 and not a 8330m the new operating sytem will work. The 3rd party app crunch sms I think has what your looking for. I have Empower SMS, a paid app and it does this. It works great, best 2.99 I spent on this phone. Not sure if boostcan be added to sprint, maybe someone will chime in.

You can do that or use a hybrid.

As far as the Sprint 8330 being an 8330 or 8330M; when I go to options then status I see an MEID, while options then about reports an 8330.
Interestingly enough the Boost 8330 shows the same thing, and it's my understanding from the reading I've been doing that Boost's are not 8330Ms.

I have looked at Empower SMS, it looks great, and will definitely get it if I can't sort this out any other way. The sms is the biggest deal for me, but there are other slight improvements in the new OS in my opinion that make the effort worth it.
Thanks again for your reply guys.

It is my understanding once you get the new operating system on the phone, there isnt room for much else, the phone really lags. It will probably be different for a hybrid or a shrinked system. These phones dont come with much memory to start, if it is just sms iphone style texting your looking for, my opinion would be add the app. I dont think the new operating system improves much.

Yeah, the hybrids don't compare at all to the Boost OS. I have plenty of apps/games, and after a battery pull I still got 31 MBs.

Yes definately use the hybrids rather than the Boost OS 5.0. You'll have a lot of free space afterwards. There's a lot of extra crap in the Boost OS that you don't need.

If you go to Options, and ABOUT, it will say 8330 or 8330m. If its not (m), you're good to go.

Options then About shows 8330, so I guess I'm good to go. Now I'll look into the hybrids. I will report back, probably with more questions as I plug along.
    Thanks again everyone.

OK guys, a little confused about this 8330M or not thing My phone has an 18 digit MEID, but Options/About, #HELP*, etc, all say 8330. Somewhere in this forum I read that carriers may assign an MEID even if the phone is an 8330. So if someone can help me figure this out before I try the upgrade to OS 5 (hybrid), it would be greatly appreciated.
Alternately, if I try to install the new OS on my 8330, if it's an 8330M, will I mess the thing up, or will it simply not allow me to do it?
    Thanks again,

    Al

Well it's official. Pulled the trigger and installed 8330 v438.13.1 on my phone. Not anywhere as difficult as I though it would be, although the customizing needs a little tweaking on my end. Works great, and good bit of space left for apps (around 40MB).
Thanks again to everyone for the help.
