I had the same problem!!! But I tried this, connecting to the desktop manager and in the backup/advanced options I refreshed where it said "saved email messages" and it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has happened to me a couple of times.

I still don't know what causes it, but I do know that I have no hidden unread messages anywhere.

A battery pull has solved it each time for me, and as with a few other BB "quirks", you just learn to live with it....
