So I heard different rumors about how to use the Messenger...

1) They need an email address
or
2) The PIN is supposed to work some how

I'm a little bit lost at this... Anybody want to throw a Noob some advice?

No email address needed. It's basically a IM client using your PIN number. You can chat with other BB users for free.

So I just put his PIN in the PIN field in his address book?

I sent a request to a friend; he said he never got an alert about it.

MUST have a data plan. It is RIM-specific and only works from BlackBerry to BlackBerry. BBM uses very small amounts of data, unless you start slinging files back and forth, so it shouldn't cost you anything more than the cost of your data plan.
